Are you already doing some of this?

Which parts of the Daily 5 are you already implementing?  How often?

  1. Read to Self
  2. Read to Someone
  3. Work on Writing
  4. Listen to Reading
  5. Spelling/Word Work

  1. I have implemented the first 3 so far, and this week I am hoping to add Word Work. It takes a lot of practice to get these fully implemented, but when they are it is awesome!!

  2. You are right Ashley. Like anything new, it takes time and patience to implement. Do your students seem to be enjoying what you have done so far with the Daily 5? What was the easiest part to implement-of the three you have done?

  3. They LOVE the Daily 5!! They get so excited when I say we are going to do that. We are working on changing our daily schedule to best suit the Daily 5/Cafe to give us the most time. It all has been fairly easy to implement because the kids are so receptive to starting something new and trying new things. The hardest thing as a teacher to work on is NOT micromanaging and wanting to talk to those kids across the room. You really need to be present for the student or students you are working with. The great thing about Daily 5 and Cafe is that there is so much modeling and practice and building of stamina that it just becomes 2nd nature for the kids!

  4. Alright, here it goes, I am not currently using the Daily 5. i have been using parts and pieces of Reading Workshop, but it is quite similar. The Daily 5 seems to break it down to help me manage the reading block better so I can have focus lessons with those in need and provide the students time to read and write without me micro-managing everything. I have difficulty teaching focus lessons, because my students think they need their immediate questions or thoughts expressed no matter what I may have going on with others. I am anxious to continue reading to stat incorporating these in my classroom.

  5. Jodi- I understand. When I first started...we started with one piece. Read to self. I had a timer started and I watched for my first two fidgeting students to know when to stop for the day. I kept our new time on task (reading) time on the board. We always tried to break that time with a new LONGER time. It took a couple weeks to get them where I needed them to be in order to start on the individual conferences. I am excited to see how it will work for you!

  6. Yes, the building of stamina is very time consuming. The first day for Read to Self we made it 3 minutes before we had to stop. Then we made it 5 the next day. :) Baby steps!
